I don't think this movie is bad at all. Is not boring. The acting is good, so the cinematography, the story and the music. It just has not much make up and a lot of mud. Not too much action, in the blockbuster sense of the word. I guess it was a bit ahead of it's time: the 80's Reagan-Rambo Era. Okay, Pacino seems to be a bit out of place, but after a few minutes he blends with the the story, I buy it and i don't have any problem with it.Revolution (we are talking about the American Revolution here) was a big big flop. So big that Pacino went away from the movies for four years (I think he made a comeback with Sea of Love in 1989).
The brits were decadent, the americans trashy but we should be able to deal with that.
I like the unconvetional spirit of the story. Kind of realistic. Not so "Hollywood". I love the atmosphere of the forrest scene when they are escaping after the rescue. The fact that Pacino character doesn't turn in to the typical "american" that first doesn't wanna get involve (a la Rick in Casablanca and many others later on) but we know he will turn into a leader fighter or a heroe, so common in freedom movies. The paralel between Donald Sutherland and Al Pacino's relationship with their respective sons is interesting. The long and spaced love relationship between the couple (Al and Kinski) works for me.
I just found an old copy of the original region 2 DVD (I saw the movie many years ago). I knew it was rare already. I just didn't know that it has been recently "revisited" in a different version. I haven't seen it. So, I am recomending you very much at least the unfairly underrated original version.
