FRAZETTA (1928- 2010)

A fines de los setentas, en el Ovalo de Miraflores, junto al cine El Pacífico, había una librería que siempre me dejaba con ganas de ir a buscar plata para comprar libros y revistas. Fué allí que por primera vez vi ese fabuloso trineo tirado por osos polares...de Frank Frazetta.

Frazetta: The Silver Warrior

"Frazetta". La mera mención de la palabra enciende la luz de un universo poblado por toda una mitología de herculeos guerreros, feroces bestias gigantescas y sensuales amazonas desnudas. Frank Frazetta es el mítico emperador del "Fantasy Art" o de lo que hoy conocemos por ese nombre. The King is dead. Long live The King!

Acaso uno de los artistas más influyentes del siglo XX. No hay quien, dedicado al arte fantástico, en sus diversas manifestaciones, no esté para siempre en deuda con él. No hay quien haya sido más "artístico" y original que él.

Llama mi atención el hecho de como un ser humano de especial genio y originalidad, de esos que llamamos Maestros, al morir, es trascendido por su obra. Su legado es tan vasto que, si bien nos entristece la mortal partida del creador, nos sentimos reconfortados por la inmortalidad de su obra. Y este es el caso de Frazetta. Sabíamos que ya pasaba los ochenta y nos alegraba saber que aun compartíamos el sol y las estrellas con él. Que aun andaba por ahí, recibiendo homenajes y almorzando y envejeciendo. Sabemos que ahora que murió, las impresionantes imágenes que creó están aquí para quedarse.

Un hombre rudo como sus héroes. Eximio deportista en su juventud pudo haber sido el mejor en lo que se hubiese propuesto y, para fortuna de los que no nos cansamos de contemplar su arte, se decidió por el arte fantástico.

Muy a menudo, su arte salvaje y sombrío tenía la cualidad de lo remoto y la patina de lo atemporal. Algo así como ésa época de Conan, imposible de ubicar con exactitud en el tiempo y que le sienta tan bien porque es acaso la esencia de su misterio.

Se me hace difícil escoger los Frazetta con que ilustrar esta entrada. Al menos retratar mis copias de la trilogía de libros editados por Arnie & Cathy Fenner que sintetizan y recopilan lo más representativo de su arte: Icon (1998), Legacy (1999) and Testament (2001) no me parece una inapropiada muestra de mi interes.

Luego está ese magnífico DVD "Frazetta: Painting With Fire" (Lance Laspina, 2003)

Pero bueno, si he de poner algo más del gran maestro pues que sean Tarzan y sus simios en gloriosa tinta y carboncillo.

The Master and the Star

I liked his pictures since i don't remember well. One of the first photografers i care to learn his name (the first was Ansel Adams). The lot of postcards, books and old Life magazines I keep talk about my pleasure for his work. Just have to confess I didn't know about the fact that he was in jail when he was very young acussed of killing his father and that some 20th Century icons like Einstein, Freud and Mann, where on his side.

Anyway, Philippe Halsman (Riga, 1906- New York, 1979) was one the giant famous portrait photografers (other one could be Avedon but i have to say that i have a softer spot for the Latvian one). He became very popular for making jump royalty, politicians and stars and catching them in the act on the air.

So without further ado. Some classic shots of the master of some cool guys I just can't have enough here, in Guelyland.
