ABOUT GUELYLAND

"One of the smallest , independent kingdoms in the ciberuniverse. Nothing fancy. Population? Just me, myself and my jaguars, my movies and my books (and, at this very moment, YOU). Hided and secret like Skull Island or Opar, the ancients in Guelyland use to read the scrools of a minor god called Voor-Hes.
Most of the treasures of Guelyland are made of paper, plastic and vinyl.Guelyland dreams with expanding in deep more then in surface. The music of Nik Kershaw has been heard here. There are apes, lots of apes in Guelyland. Woody Allen and Bob Hope visit it quite often. Here we love books (the Kingdoms Library is both celebrated and secret) Here we are atheists but very tolerant and think of god a bit too often and much. Guelyland is, the stuff my dreams are made of..."

THE FACE OF CULT

There is not completely satisfactory definition to what a Cult Movie is. In the following video essay, by Mike Miley, we hear that the essence of a cult movie is defined by the close-ups of the iconic characters that populate them. I don't know how much i can agree with this theory because this kind of camera work is not exclusive of this type of movie. But at least he give it a smart try. So, the face we stare on the screan staring at us is like the mirror that reflects not our faces but what is behind the features: our souls. Well, as I said before, I'm not so sure. Nevertheless I can't stop staring these dear weirdos from the most iconic Cult Movies we use to follow.

As a further reading I strongly recommend these three out of print wonderful volumes of one of my favorite movie books writer, Danny Peary: Cult Movies , Cult Movies 2 and Cult Movies 3. Edited by Fireside.

And if you feel like, go ahead and fill the numbers of the cult movie icons portraited on the cover of this entry.
Go ahead...Make my day!

Thanks so much for linking to my video essay. I understand your reservations about this quality being exclusive to cult films vs. simply being powerful close-ups, but I do believe that there is a marked difference and wanted to use the essay to show what makes it different.

Thanks again,
Mike Miley

Hi, Mike:
You gave magnificent examples and the video essay was so strong and well done that i wanted more people to see it. At least show it to the friends that visit this little blog. I now consider you one of them.

Greetings from Sweden!
